It can be used by clicking on it and choosing the file or through command line (e.g.: '4gb_patch file.exe'). It automatically creates a backup copy of the original executable. 'This lets rfactor use 4GB of RAM (on 64 bit machines with more than 4GB!) rather than 2GB and can prevent MANY CTDs due to too many AI. However, unless your PC is pressed for RAM when playing 32-bit games - not likely if you can use this patch - I don't see it doing all that much for you. I do understand, I spent no small amount of time trying to squeeze everything I could out of my laptop, and outside of a few cases it doesn't often do much. The 4GB Patch only lets you use up to approximately 3.8GB of system RAM for the game. That is limitation of being a 32-bit game and cannot be overcome. Your screenshot is showing you are using 4.2GB (which includes some system overhead), so you have maxed that out. The 4GB patch will make your executable 'large address aware' and enable the OS to allow up to 4GB of addressing rather than the 2GB which is normal for a 32 bit executable. One of the advantages of running the unpatched FS9 program is that the OS and drivers are loaded differently and this allows the program to use more of the 2GB. So this thread is a plug for a tool that I found in my search to try to find a way for my PC games to take advantage of the memory on my system. Most PC games are 32-bit programs that often only take advantage of 2 GB of memory at the most. For those with more memory, specifically people with 64-bit OS's, it's a little unfortunate to have all that memory just wasted.

This program however patches executables so that they can take advantage of 4 GB of system memory. In practice what this should allow for is less stuttering in game and better performance overall. The site I linked explains how the tool works. It's pretty easy to do and, having tried it, I'm happy with the results. So if you have a moderate PC that needs a little nudge to get the performance you want this might be a safe, easy way to do it (as opposed to doing things like overclocking).
