(This is related to the black screen issue that many people are getting).
I'm not exactly sure whether the incompatibility of this game with the Windows 8 operating system, specifically 64-bit, has been discussed here yet, but I'd just like to inform everyone that this game simply doesn't work and so a patch is needed.
I've tried all of the different methods mentioned including:
Running 'blackscreen.exe' then trying to launch the game.
Disabling the Origin in-game interference.
Adding '+restart1' to the command line.
Running in Windows XP (Service Pack 3) Compatibility mode.
Running in 640 x 480.
Running in 1024 x 768.
Disabling display scaling on high DPI settings.
Running in administrator mode / Providing administrator privileges.
Playing around with the game files inside the 'Mods' sub-folder.
Disabling all other non-essential background processes.
I am more than willing to accept the possibility that the problem does lie on my end, but my computer is of a high-end specification, the only problem with it is it runs the lousy Windows 8 operating system which is just inferior to its predecessor. I am almost entirely certain that this is a universal problem for all machines on this awful operating system, but I haven't been able to test with other users of this OS so I can't be sure until others here give it a try. I cannot find any reports on the black screen issue that mentions using Windows 8, except for one, which describes trying all of the methods out there but still having no luck. This further strengthens my beliefs that this game will not work on Windows 8.
I hope those running Windows 8 can visit this thread and either prove me entirely wrong and provide a method to fix the black screen issue, or for something to be done about it. (Windows 8 compatibility patch being the most desired).

Hi all Comrades and for you 'jos3phR'
I shall try to help you because here on many of our PC Windows 8 (full official UK DVD version) is installed in dual boot with Windows 7 by my son and I (cause we play often in local network) we can play BF1942 CD version and BF1942 Origin version and all its Mods without problem.
Please try this procedure (you have no risk because always BF1942 origin version is Free and if you should (could) problems you should (could) des-install (uninstall) the game and re-install it again).
Note: You DO (must) install one Mod for that and also a special 'widescreen compatibility patch'.
A. About your PC drivers.
A1.Be sure you made (did) all windows 8 update via 'Windows update'.
A2.Be sure all your PC drivers are updated (for example be sure your Video card(s) drivers are updated with last version).
A2a. For Nvidia Video cards :

Note: always restart your PC just after you installed or updated drivers.

C3.Then restart your PC.
D. About BF1942 Shortcut and FH shortcut on your deskop.
D1. Click with mouse's right button on BF1942 shortcut icon on your deskop.
D2. In 'Compatibility' tab select (check) only:
'Run this program as an administrator'.
WARNING! Do not select (check) other compatibility like windows XP or other.
D3.Do the same things (D1 and D2) about FH shortcut icon on your deskop.
D4.By security restart your PC again.
E. Now do a test about FH Mod in single player mode (choose for example the map named (with name) Arnhem.
WARNING: Many FH maps are not play-able in single player mode.
Can you play FH or not?
F. After that do a test about BF1942 'Vanilla' in single player mode.
Can you play BF1942 Vanilla?

Origin version of BF1942 just crash on my windows8 PC in any provided tweak but the linked C1 file has a widescreen patch that make the game start.
The problem is that i can't join online game because i don't have CD Key .. as i installed it via Origin.
Making long story short; the Origin version of BF 1942 is not widescreen compliant and EA is not competent to fix that although some guys are and kind enough to share it.
I have the original game and CD key somewhere in my room but the incompetence of EA just broke my courage to look for it.

In reality many of us found solutions to get in game 'quasi-widescreen'.

I tested all these patchs on Windows 7; Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 and no problem about BF1942 CD version and also on BF1942 origin version.
But I know some players get problems because writings rights are very restrictive on these OS for installations by default.
I also wrote a very detailed tutorial with pictures if you want to change 'users' rights, for example on Windows 8.1 OS.
